Frequently asked questions

How does it work?

A sealed envelope arrives in your letterbox with everything from the case file: police interviews, photographs, letters, a newspaper clipping and more. There's nothing to download and no rule book. Spread it across a table, work through the evidence together and decide who did it. When you're ready, open the sealed solution envelope to find out if you were right.

How many people can play, and for how long?

Death on New Year's Day is designed for 2–8 players aged 14 and up, and takes 2–3 hours.

What if we get stuck?

Ask for a hint in the chat bubble at the bottom of any page on this site. We'll nudge you in the right direction without giving away the ending.

Do we need anything else?

A table, a phone to scan the QR codes that open the audio evidence, and something to write with. That's it.

Is it a murder mystery party game?

Not the kind with character scripts and costumes. Everyone plays detective together, working through the same evidence. It still makes a good night with friends: put the files on the table and let the arguments begin.

Can we play it again?

Once you know who did it, the mystery is spent. Put the evidence back in the envelope and pass it on to friends.

Is it suitable for teenagers?

We recommend it for ages 14 and up. The case involves a death, a party with drinking and some dark secrets.

Is it a real case?

No. Kererū Bay and everyone in it are fictional.

Can I send it as a gift?

Yes. Enter their address as the delivery address at checkout and add a gift message. The receipt is emailed to you, not to them.

When will it arrive?

We post within two working days by tracked post, and most cases arrive two to five working days after that. Postage is a flat NZ$7 for any number of copies. See delivery and returns.

Do you post overseas?

Not yet. We only deliver within New Zealand for now.

Will the online clues stay up?

Yes. The audio evidence is hosted on this site and isn't going anywhere. If you ever can't reach it, message us and we'll help.

When is the next case?

Two more cases are being written now. Join the list and we'll email you when they're released.

How do I contact you?
